Emmet County Board of Commissioners

The Emmet County Board of Commissioners is the governing body for the County of Emmet, exercising legislative and administrative functions. There are seven members on the Board, each elected on a partisan basis for two year terms from districts that are approximately equal in population. Board Leadership is elected each year by the Board which consists of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson.

The primary functions of the Board of Commissioners include determination of type and level of County services, adoption of County budget, equalization of property values, legislative oversight services provided by Emmet County, appointment of various advisory boards and commissions, and county officials.

Bill Fedus appointed to Board of Commissioners

Resort Township resident Bill Fedus has been appointed to the Emmet County Board of Commissioners to fill the vacancy created following the death of commissioner Tom Foltz in April.
Foltz represented the 6th District, which includes Resort Township and a small portion of the city of Petoskey.
On Thursday evening at their regular meeting, the six commissioners voted unanimously in support of Fedus' appointment to the post, following nomination by commissioner Les Atchison. Atchison noted Fedus' many community involvements, including his previous experience as Resort Township Supervisor and his service as a Pellston Regional Airport committee member, as well as his decades as a successful local businessman.
Fedus' term begins immediately, upon his swearing in by the clerk, and expires Dec. 31, 2010. Five other applicants had expressed interest in fulfilling the remainder of Foltz's term. However, most had indicated they planned to run for the District 6 seat in the November election, and the commissioners sought to appoint someone who would not be running so as to not give an unfair advantage to that person. Fedus said he will not run for the two-year term.
"There were some really terrific applicants," Atchison added.
